Warm-up: (will go into Table of Contents) read "Harlem" by Langston Hughes and answer the following question: What is the speaker's message? Support your answer with text evidence. In class, read "Mother to Son" and "The Courage That My Mother Had" and review for benchmark. Thurs 1/25: Language Arts Benchmark! Plan to come to makeups in CAT on Monday if absent (no CAT Friday due to PAWS Incentive). Fri 1/26: Clean out binders from Quarter 2 except those documents highlighted in the Table of Contents and store in classroom. Introduce new vocabulary routine beginning next week. Receive Vocabulary Choice Board which can be found in Yearlong LA Resources. Receive back Text Structure Quiz and go over answers.

ScheduleWe will finish out the remainder of Unit 2 and this Quarter with texts that also fit our unit theme of "Life is not fair" and are related to the Essential Questions that we introduced at the beginning of the unit. We will start focusing on some skills we have not yet assessed or have shown through past assessment data to be a weak area for the whole team.
NEW: links for downloadable files will appear as green links in the description of the schedule of lessons below rather than separate link/buttons. Mon 1/8: School closed. Check back for updates. Tues 1/9: AoW refresher on vocabulary and context clues. Students will be required to work on the vocabulary option and practice with context clues, due Friday. Wed 1/10: Text structure presentation for notes. The notes handout where students should be writing was given at the beginning of the year and can be reprinted from the file linked under Language Arts > Yearlong LA Resources> Page 8: Text structure notes. HW: Make flash cards for text structure signal words. Review the practice from the notes to help you review. Quiz next week on Friday 1/19. Thurs 1/11: Text structure practice. Students will be given a topic and free write to make it fit certain text structures. Students will use signal words to help write these text structures. HW: AoW vocabulary option due tomorrow. Fri 1/12: AoW check. Finish text structure practice and compare with classmates. If time allows, take notes on character motivation, internal conflict, external conflict, and direct and indirect characterization. HW: Study for text structure quiz Friday 1/19. Schedule: Mon 12/11: Mrs. Mulrine out sick-- project will resume on Wednesday. Students who are behind should check in with Mrs. Mulrine Tuesday afternoon if possible. Students who have not turned in their article should come to CAT on Wednesday. Any students who have not started their infographic by now should make plans to create their infographic on poster. Tues 12/12: (In classroom) Receive back Outsiders Test and use Quarterly Assessment Review tool (already in students' Table of Contents). Complete an activity about infographics. Wed 12/13: (In Media Center) Finish articles and infographics! Start practicing for presentation. HW: Bring index cards for presentation notes. Thurs 12/14: (In Media Center. Finish infographics. ) Practice for presentation. Fri 12/15: (In classroom) Practice for presentation. Presentations begin Monday. Please notify the teacher if you know of any scheduled absences so that your presentation can be completed before Winter Break. Mon 12/4: Students should finish any research and complete the first half of their rough draft using their writing graphic organizer. Students will use parenthetical citations in their writing. Students who finish rough draft early may start typing their article (laptops limited). HW: Students will need index cards by the end of the week to start making presentation notes. Tues 12/5: Students should finish their rough drafts with parenthetical citations. Students who finish may start typing their article (laptops limited). The Works Cited Page/Bibliography will be modeled. HW: We will be in the Media Center for the remainder of the week. Do not be late! Wed 12/6: (Media Center) Students will type their final drafts of their article with Works Cited. If students finish typing, they should seek a peer review and go through the editing checklist on their graphic organizers. Students who finish early may work on the infographic. Thurs 12/7: Students should be finishing their final drafts of their article and moving on to their infographic. If students are done with their infographic, they should move on to planning their presentations. HW: Media Circulation tomorrow, 2nd half of class. Bring library books. Fri 12/8: Media Circulation 2nd half of class. The final draft of the article (with Works Cited) is due in Google Classroom. The infographic will be due Monday (our last day in the Media Center on computers) in Google Classroom as a separate uploaded assignment. Students who are ready will move on to planning and practicing their presentations. HW: Monday is the last day for Media Center computers. Students should also make sure they still have their Quarterly Assessment Review still in their binders. Next week, students will receive back their Unit 2 Outsiders test and analyze it. Mon 11/27: Introduce research project and topics. All research and writing must be completed at school. Students may begin to experiment with templates for the infographics they will create using their research later on. HW: BYOD Wednesday through Friday for those students with permission. Tues 11/28: Continue introducing the project by modeling how to pull relevant research from articles, then use quotations or paraphrasing. Students will also go through how to use their note-taking handouts and parenthetical citations. Students should decide on their research topic. HW: BYOD Wednesday through Friday. Wed 11/29: *Project delay due to Mrs. Mulrine being out.* Students will continue practicing taking notes on another potential article for their research, "From War to America" for the topic of "outsiders." Project timeline will resume tomorrow Thurs 11/30: BYOD. Students will complete taking notes on their first article. Fri 12/1: BYOD. Students will complete taking notes on their second article. Students may take notes on a third article if they did not find the material they are looking for. HW: Bring index cards for presentation note cards next week. ScheduleMon 11/20: Read play version of The Outsiders and complete activity. HW: Turn in loaner books or late work. Character books will not be accepted after Thanksgiving!
